Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick and clear answers to our travelers' most common questions regarding trek permits, altitude preparation, packing essentials, and Machu Picchu circuits.

Bookings & Payments

For the Classic Inca Trail (4 or 2 days), permits are strictly limited by the Peruvian government to 500 per day (including guides and porters). We strongly recommend booking 4 to 7 months in advance for peak season (May to September). For alternative treks like Salkantay, Lares, or Choquequirao, booking 3 to 6 weeks in advance is usually sufficient.

We accept credit/debit card deposits securely online via Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, as well as PayPal and international bank wire transfers. The remaining balance can be paid in Cusco during your pre-trek briefing in cash (US Dollars or Peruvian Soles) or via credit card.

While initial governmental permits (Inca Trail and Machu Picchu tickets) are non-refundable according to Ministry of Culture regulations, we always work to reschedule alternative tours, train tickets, and hotel arrangements whenever possible. Comprehensive travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage is mandatory.

Altitude & Health Preparation

Cusco sits at 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level. We recommend arriving at least 2 full days before starting any strenuous trek. During your first 48 hours, drink plenty of water, sip traditional coca leaf tea or muña tea, avoid heavy meals and alcohol, and consult your physician before travel regarding medication such as Diamox (Acetazolamide).

Yes, absolutely. All Wayna Peru Expeditions lead guides are certified in Wilderness First Aid (WFR). Every group carries a certified medical first-aid kit, emergency supplemental oxygen tanks, and satellite radios for communication in remote high-mountain passes.

Trekking Equipment & Porters

No! During our pre-trek briefing, we provide each traveler with a secure duffel bag. Our mountain team (porters on the Inca Trail or horsemen on Salkantay/Ausangate) carries up to 7 kg (15 lbs) of your personal belongings (sleeping bag, clothes, toiletries). You only carry a light daypack with your water, camera, rain jacket, and snacks.

Yes! Our professional backcountry chefs take pride in preparing fresh, delicious gourmet meals on the trail. We easily cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-allergy requirements at no extra charge. Please inform us of any dietary needs when completing your booking form.

Machu Picchu Citadel Visits

You must bring your physical, original passport used at the time of booking. Student ticket holders must also present their valid university student ID card. Copies or photographs on phones are not accepted by government park rangers at the entrance gates.

The Ministry of Culture operates specific circuits through the ruins (Circuits 1, 2, and 3). Circuit 2 offers the classic postcard photo and complete ruins tour. In addition, optional extra mountain permits can be added: Huayna Picchu (the iconic peak behind the citadel) or Machu Picchu Mountain (the highest vantage point).
