Overview

The Ausangate Hike is one of the most spectacular high-altitude treks in the Peruvian Andes, offering an intimate encounter with the sacred Apu Ausangate, the highest peak in the Cusco region at 6,384 meters. This four-day adventure takes hikers through remote landscapes of the Vilcanota mountain range, featuring turquoise glacial lakes, vast Andean plains, and dramatic snow-capped peaks. Unlike more crowded routes, the Ausangate trail provides a profound sense of solitude and connection with nature, while also allowing a visit to the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). It is a journey that combines physical challenge with cultural immersion in traditional Quechua communities.

Over four days, participants trek approximately 40-50 kilometers at elevations mostly above 4,000 meters, crossing high passes that test endurance and reward with breathtaking views. The route passes by hot springs, colorful mineral-streaked mountains, and serene lagoons that reflect the surrounding glaciers. This condensed version of the classic Ausangate circuit is ideal for travelers with limited time who still want to experience the raw beauty of the Andes without compromising on highlights.

The trek is moderately to challenging in difficulty, suitable for fit hikers with prior high-altitude experience or proper acclimatization in Cusco. Professional guides, support staff, and horses for gear make the journey safer and more enjoyable. Camp nights under star-filled skies and meals prepared by experienced chefs add to the unforgettable atmosphere.

Whether you seek adventure, spiritual connection with the mountains, or simply stunning photography opportunities, the Ausangate Hike 4 Days delivers an authentic Peruvian wilderness experience that few other treks can match.

Tour Highlights about Ausangate Hike 4 Days

Introduction

The Ausangate Hike 4 Days is a condensed yet immersive trekking adventure in the Cordillera Vilcanota, centered around the majestic Ausangate mountain. Starting from the village of Tinqui or Upis after a scenic drive from Cusco, the itinerary blends high passes, glacial lakes, and traditional Andean scenery. It culminates with a visit to Rainbow Mountain for sunrise or sunset views, making it a perfect choice for those wanting both the classic Ausangate experience and the iconic colorful peak in a shorter timeframe.

Each day builds in intensity, with hikes ranging from 5 to 9 hours through rugged terrain at extreme altitudes. Trekkers encounter diverse ecosystems, from puna grasslands dotted with llamas and alpacas to rocky passes offering panoramic vistas of glaciers and valleys. The route often includes stops at hot springs on the first day, providing a relaxing introduction before ascending deeper into the mountains.

This trek stands out for its remoteness and cultural authenticity. Small Quechua communities along the path maintain ancient traditions, and the area is considered sacred by locals. With support from a professional team—including guides, cooks, and arrieros (muleteers)—hikers can focus on the scenery rather than logistics, while camping in stunning locations each night.

Overall, the Ausangate Hike 4 Days offers a balanced mix of challenge and reward. It requires good physical condition and prior acclimatization but delivers memories of pristine nature, high-altitude thrill, and a deeper appreciation for Peru’s Andean heritage.

Itinerary

DAY 1 Cusco – Upis – Tinqui

The adventure begins early, with hotel pickup at 6:00 a.m. A two-hour private transfer takes you to the village of Tinqui, where you’ll have time to stretch your legs and observe the locals in their traditional attire. Afterward, the journey continues for another hour along a dusty, bumpy road to the trailhead. There, breakfast is served and you meet the muleteers who will accompany you on the expedition.

The hike begins at Upispampa, passing through remote landscapes and crossing streams toward the small village of Upis. The trail is mostly flat, with some gentle climbs and descents, and after about three hours you’ll reach the camp. The first night’s accommodation is in private cabins. A hearty lunch is prepared by the cook, and in the afternoon there is the option of an additional hike to Upis Lagoon (two hours round trip), with a flat initial section and a gradual climb toward the end.

Back at the cabins, the afternoon is enjoyed with a cup of tea while admiring the view of Ausangate from the window. The day concludes with dinner and an unforgettable starry sky.

The snowcapped Ausangate massif lies to the left, while the guide shares insights about the region’s plants, animals, and landscapes. With luck, you may spot condors, chinchillas, and vicuñas.

The trail continues toward the colorful lagoons and the Puca Cocha campsite, surrounded by towering peaks and hanging glaciers. Icefalls can often be heard crashing into the lagoons. The campsite is set up near Puca Cocha Lagoon, where ducks, Andean geese, and other birds are common. Travel Guide

Prepare thoroughly for the Ausangate Hike by spending at least 2-3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400 m) before the trek. Bring layered clothing for cold nights and variable daytime weather, including a waterproof jacket, warm hat, gloves, and sturdy trekking boots. A good sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures is essential, along with a headlamp, sunscreen, and reusable water bottles. Stay hydrated, walk at a steady pace, and listen to your guide regarding altitude symptoms.

The drive from Cusco to the trailhead takes about 3-4 hours through scenic rural landscapes. During the trek, respect the environment by following Leave No Trace principles and honoring local Quechua customs. Pack light since horses carry the main gear, but keep personal items accessible. Upon return to Cusco, allow time to rest and enjoy a hot shower after the adventure.
