Overview
The Short 2-Day Hike to Machu Picchu begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco and a drive to Ollantaytambo for the morning train to KM 104. After a short orientation and snacks, you start hiking along the Urubamba River with views of farmlands, snow-capped peaks, and the powerful river below. The trail gradually ascends through cloud forest, passing the small site of Chachabamba before reaching the highlight ruin of Wiñay Wayna (“Forever Young”).
From Wiñay Wayna, the path joins the Classic Inca Trail for the final stretch. You continue uphill on ancient stone steps to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where the first views of Machu Picchu open up dramatically. After enjoying the panoramic vistas and taking iconic photos, you descend to the citadel for a late-afternoon visit with fewer visitors. You then take the bus down to Aguas Calientes for overnight hotel accommodation and a relaxing evening.
On the second day, you catch an early bus back up to Machu Picchu for a comprehensive guided tour of the main sites, temples, and terraces. This allows you to explore the citadel in the morning light when it feels most mystical. After free time for additional photos or optional climbs, you return by bus to Aguas Calientes and board the train back to Ollantaytambo or Cusco.
