Overview

That spot called Choquequirao translates to something like gold holder. It rests over the fast-moving Apurimac River fed by ice, with big icy mountains all around, up on a tall edge. Folks don’t go there much, it’s like another forgotten Inca place. People say it’s similar to Machu Picchu but not as famous, harder to reach, and way bigger, about three times the size. Back then, it was a hideout for Incas fighting off the Spanish after they took over. Later, no one went, jungle growth covered it up, and even now, experts keep finding new parts.

Choquequirao sits where forest meets high Peruvian mountains, on a peak around 3033 meters or 9951 feet high. What keeps people away adds to its appeal: you can only get there walking. The whole back-and-forth trail is roughly 40 kilometers or 25 miles, tough going, with ups and downs from about 1400 meters or 4593 feet to 3100 meters or 10170 feet.

Tour Highlights about Choquequirao Trek 4 Days

Introduction

The Choquequirao Trek 4 Days is a spectacular high-altitude adventure that takes you to the remote and majestic Inca citadel of Choquequirao, often called the “sister city” of Machu Picchu.

This immersive journey leads you through the dramatic Apurimac Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, with steep descents, challenging ascents, and breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and lush cloud forest.

Over four unforgettable days you will hike approximately 40 km round-trip, explore the vast terraces and temples of Choquequirao in relative solitude, and experience authentic Andean wilderness far from the crowds.

It is the perfect choice for fit hikers who want a genuine Inca trail adventure with cultural depth and stunning natural beauty without the longer commitment of the 7-day route to Machu Picchu.

Preparation Tips Spend at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400 m) before the trek. Focus on hydration, light cardio exercises, and coca tea to prepare your body for the extreme elevation changes and long hiking days in the canyon.

Essential Packing List

  • Layered clothing: waterproof jacket, warm fleece, hat, gloves, and broken-in trekking boots with good ankle support
  • 3-4 season sleeping bag rated for 0°C or colder
  • Headlamp, high-SPF sunscreen, reusable water bottles, trekking poles, and personal medications
  • Small daypack for essentials while horses carry the main gear

During the Trek Walk at a steady pace, stay well hydrated especially during the steep canyon sections, and follow your guide’s instructions on altitude management and weather changes. Practice Leave No Trace principles, respect sacred Inca sites, and honor local Quechua customs at every community you pass.

Post-Trek Advice After returning to Cusco, allow at least one full rest day to recover. Enjoy a hot shower, a good meal, and time to reflect on your extraordinary journey through the Apurimac Canyon and the hidden treasures of Choquequirao.

Faqs

Do I need previous trekking experience? Yes. Hikers with prior multi-day high-altitude experience will find this route safer and more enjoyable.

Will we have enough time to explore Choquequirao? Absolutely. You will have a full afternoon on Day 2 and the entire morning of Day 3 to explore the main ruins, terraces, and optional upper sectors with your private guide.

How cold do the nights get? Nights at higher camps near the ruins can drop to freezing. A quality sleeping bag and warm layers are mandatory for comfort.
